Propecia – Hair Loss Treatment

Statistics show that one in three adult males will experience hair loss or male pattern-baldness at some point in their lives. Balding in adult males can start showing signs in the early 20’s, developing more and more as they age. In most cases baldness is a hereditary and inherited genetic trait caused by the abundance of DHT (dihydrotesterone) in the scalp, which can cause the hair follicles to shrink and ultimately stop growing hair. Propecia (finasteride) targets the DHT, stopping the baldness, and allowing for normal and healthy hair growth to resume.

Only take Propecia as directed by your doctor. Propecia is dispensed in 1-mg tablets that are to be taken orally, once per day. Propecia is not for women or children. If you miss a dose of Propecia do NOT double-dose. Simply take your next dose at the usual time. Never share a prescription of Propecia it is intended for those that it is prescribed for. Since hair takes time to grow, usually growing about half an inch per month, you will not start to see results from Propecia for at least three months.

Propecia works by targeting the main cause of hair loss and male pattern-baldness, DHT, found in the scalp near the hair follicles. When taken as directed by a physician, Propecia works to target the DHT and disable, and block it. The end result is the ceasing of your male pattern-baldness and the thickening of your existing hair, and in some cases the re-growth of hair that was lost.

There are some side effects which can occur when taking Propecia, as is the same with any prescription drug. Keep in mind that in the clinical trials, these side effects only occurred 2% of the time and furthermore, when the patients discontinued use of Propecia, the side effects ceased.

  • May experience temporary Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
  • May cause less sexual desire
  • May reduce the semen coun
  • Dizziness
  • Tenderness or swelling in breasts
  • Mild headache
  • Mild upset stomach

If you experience any of these side effects be sure to let your physician know about them.

Always consult with your physician about Propecia and whether or not it is the right drug for you, as each person has a unique situation. Propecia is not for women or children and must not be handled by pregnant women due to serious side effects that could occur with their baby. If you are getting a prostate cancer screening done, be sure to let your doctor know as Propecia can show up in prostate cancer screenings and affect the results.

Propecia has shown impressive results during recent clinical studies that spanned five years. In fact, 9 out of 10 men showed noticeable results when taking Propecia. Of this whopping 90%, about 48% actually re-grew their hair and 42% stopped losing their hair. In a similar study using hair counts, 2 out of 3 men who took Propecia showed substantial hair growth.

A clinical study at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX and lead by Dr. Ian Thompson, concluded that the daily use of the hair loss drug, Propecia (finasteride) significantly reduced the likeliness of contracting prostate cancer. “The drug worked for men at low risk for prostate cancer, as well as those at high risk,” said Dr. Thompson. Similarly, smaller dosed version of finasteride, packaged as Proscar are used to effectively treat patients who are suffering from an enlarged prostate. Now men who are suffering from male pattern-baldness can not only seek relief from their symptoms, but also worry less about their 33% chances of contracting prostate cancer.
