Tadalafil is an FDA-approved medication used to treat male impotence. It’s unique among male impotence medications because it can last for up to 36 hours. Eli Lilly & Co. manufactures Tadalafil in the United States.
Tadalafil treats male impotence by relaxing penile muscles and increasing blood flow, facilitating an erection once you are sexually aroused. In most cases, Tadalafil will allow you to get and maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. After a sexual encounter, your erection will go away until you become aroused again.
Tadalafil is the only male impotence medication that can remain effective for up to 36 hours. This can be a benefit, because you won’t feel rushed to have sex right away. Tadalafil also starts working quickly. Since it starts working in as few as 30 minutes, it’s possible to have spontaneous sex whenever the mood is right.
In clinical trials, Tadalafil has been shown to work well for men with mild to severe male impotence. It’s easy and convenient to use Tadalafil, because you can take it with or without food.
Only take Tadalafil as instructed by your physician. Tadalafil works best if taken approximately 30 minutes before a sexual encounter. After taking Tadalafil, you will not get an erection until you are sexually stimulated. After sex, your erection will go away until you’re sexually aroused again. The effects of Tadalafil can last up to 36 hours, so it’s possible to get more than one erection per dose.
Tadalafil is generally well tolerated, but side effects are possible. Common minor side effects include headache, stomach upset, muscle pain and soreness, skin flushing, and nasal congestion. These minor side effects should not last more than 24 hours.
In some cases, muscle pain and soreness can start approximately 12 to 24 hours after taking Tadalafil. These side effects should subside within 48 hours. Tell your doctor if you experience more serious or persistent side effects when taking Tadalafil.
Before prescribing Tadalafil, your doctor will want to review your complete medical history and current health status. Tell your doctor if you have any health issues, including angina, heart failure, high blood pressure, low blood pressure, liver problems, kidney problems, ulcers, bleeding disorders, leukemia, or sickle cell anemia. Tell your doctor if your penis has any anatomical abnormalities or if you have ever had an erection that lasted more than 4 hours. After reviewing your medication history, your doctor will be able to determine if it’s safe for you to take Tadalafil.
Give your doctor a list of all your current prescription and non-prescription medications. This includes over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Tadalafil may interact with several medications, including nitrates, alpha-blockers, Flomax, Minipress, Uroxatral, and erythromycin. Never take Tadalafil with other medications used to treat male impotence. Your doctor will review your health information and list of current medications to determine if it’s safe for you to take Tadalafil.
IN THE EVENT OF AN ERECTION LASTING OVER 4 CONTINUOUS HOURS, IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION MUST BE OBTAINED
What to do if an erection lasts longer than 4 hours after contacting your physician:
- Stop having sexual relations or masturbation.
- Take 120 mg or 2x 60 mg of Sudafed (pseudopephrine), and wait 30 minutes.
Please ignore this step if you have or are being treated for high blood pressure.
- Take a warm bath or Jacuzzi for 40 minutes.
- If the erection still has not subsided, take another 60 mg of Sudafed (pseudoephrine), and wait for another 30 minutes.
Again, ignore this step if you have or are being treated for high blood pressure.
- Make sure to rest and relax to let the erection subside. If after 3 hours, the erection will not relent, please contact your physician again. You can also speak with your physician about any OTC medication you may take if you have any discomfort.
